The REAL ID Act is a federal law that establishes stricter security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. Beginning May 7, 2025, every U.S. traveler 18 or older will need a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted form of identification, such as a passport, to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.

Key Things to Know:

  • REAL ID enforcement begins May 7, 2025
  • It will be required for domestic air travel and access to certain federal buildings
  • You must apply in person at your state’s DMV with specific identity and residency documents
  • If you don’t have a REAL ID, you’ll need an alternative federally-accepted ID to fly

What Is REAL ID?

REAL ID is a security-enhanced driver’s license or identification card that meets federal standards set by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 to strengthen security measures following the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations. The law ensures that all state-issued IDs used for federal purposes meet specific identity verification requirements.

When Does REAL ID Go Into Effect?

The deadline for REAL ID has been extended multiple times. The current deadline is May 7, 2025. After this date, U.S. residents must have a REAL ID-compliant card or another federally-approved form of identification to:

  • Board domestic flights within the U.S.
  • Access federal buildings and military bases

How to Get a REAL ID

REAL ID is issued by state motor vehicle departments (DMVs). To apply, you’ll need to visit your local DMV in person and provide the following:

  1. Proof of Identity: A valid passport, birth certificate, or permanent resident card (Green Card)
  2. Proof of Social Security Number: A Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub showing your full SSN
  3. Proof of State Residency: Two documents such as utility bills, rental agreements, or bank statements showing your current address
  4. Name Change Documents (if applicable): Marriage certificates, divorce decrees, or court orders if your current name differs from your birth certificate

Each state may have slightly different requirements, so check your state’s DMV website before applying.

How Do I Know If I Have a REAL ID?

REAL ID-compliant licenses and IDs have a gold or black star in the upper right-hand corner. If your current driver’s license or state ID does not have this star, it is not REAL ID-compliant.

Do You Need a REAL ID?

REAL ID is not mandatory. If you do not wish to obtain one, you can use other forms of federally accepted identification, such as:

  • A valid U.S. passport or passport card
  • A U.S. military ID
  • A DHS Trusted Traveler card (such as Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI)

However, if you frequently travel domestically and do not want to carry your passport for flights, getting a REAL ID may be more convenient.

For the most up-to-date information, visit the Department of Homeland Security’s REAL ID website or check with your state’s DMV.
